TTA Episode 057

"o.0"

I spent all that time wondering who Voltarius was, and it turned out to be HIM? When the armor cracked and the big reveal was made I actually laughed out loud. This is what that scene made me think of:

Voltarius's secret identity, as Gir: It was me! I was in the turkey the entire time!!

Alpha, as Zim: I was wondering what that [turkey] was doing there.

Then the episode almost literally turned into DBZ. You're a good animator and all, but... holy crap, man. Was this your plan from the beginning? Because it completely reworks his character and not in a positive way. That moment in episode 45 where he more or less said he wanted to become strong on his own without the help of items and other users was thrown completely out of the window. He's no longer a respectable badass, but a complete and utter maniac. It felt like a jump the shark moment. I seriously hope Alpha deletes his sorry ass, because there's no way to redeem him now.

Whoah, didn't see that one coming. That was a pretty nice plot twist there. Hopefully there will be more twists up ahead - the infiltration mission arc so far has had less plot than many recent episodes such as the superb 46, 48 and 49... lots of 'where are they now???' crud with the characters wandering around in the dark trying to find each other while fighting through videogame environments; Raccoon's improvement as a fighter and Splat's brother saving her were nice touches, though.

It feels odd how everybody just suddenly knew that the virusfrags could kill people in real life and that it worked through some bizarro mind link-up, as though if you decided things worked that way and that was that. The episodes also seem to be getting a LOT longer than they used to be, but that's for the most part a good thing.

That was a pretty nice fight; in fact, it's one of my favs next to Kirb vs. EXE from episodes 28-29. Hopefully Giga will be explained later on - learning the origin (or at least the motives) of a mysterious badass is always fun.

Flamegirl's sideways stance in battle looked odd; the stance she used in her Season 1 fight felt more natural IMO. It was also weird (although funny) how she was completely and utterly indifferent to RavenFreak's return. And at what point did they figure out that Raven was a male with a female-looking avatar? Twas a decent fight though, and a decent setup for the upcoming tournament, although I'm still not crazy about the eight new characters thing (although I guess having more secondary characters for the tournament beats having a bunch of one-offs like Prismaya or Akuma... wait, couldn't they have been secondaries? Prismaya was kinda cool...).

...

...I babble. It has its flaws but this is still a good series (BTW, 38 was pretty awesome; I'd have given it an 8 or 9 if I bothered to review it).

As the second season begins, TTA continues its slow and steady improvement. This episode had a nice, flowing plot and served as a nice reintroduction to most of the main cast. Your sprite animation has grown noticeably better (I'm liken the Flash-drawn character portraits way more than the hand-drawns from season 1) as has your music selections, and the second Alpha/Tormentros fight in particular was well put together; I especially liked Alpha's finishing 3-hit combo that used Tormentros' own trap against him. BTW, the "FAMILY FUN" line made me laugh, as did Kirb's line leading up to it. Indeed, your dialogue in general was vastly superior to season 1; you're clearly getting better at writing and getting a better feel for your characters.

There were only two things that I didn't really care for;

1) Too many new characters! You've already brought in four just this episode, and from what I watched of season 2 back when it was new (I think I stopped at 48) there will be even more. The season 1 cast already had a large number of secondary characters like Rob* and SaturnDiva that didn't get much of a chance to develop or even establish a personality, and now that there are Shoguns, Tsukazas, and Brown Links competing for attention it's going to be a delicate balancing act to give time to characters outside of the core Alpha/Flamy/GC/Kirb/Nailock/Zetto group.

2) Since when was Alpha so arrogant in battle? Especially in the first fight against Tormentros, he came off as an out-of-character jerk. IIRC he grows out of it as the season goes on but it's still kinda awkward.

You've definitely grown better, and if I ever get a copy of Flash I'll probably try my hand at a weekly/bi-weekly series to improve as you have. Keep up the awesome work, Kirb- can't wait to see what season 3's like.

The graphics were pretty much rubbish but the randomly violent Samus was fairly amusing and I have to admit that the boss battle was confusing enough to make me laugh. "Jerry Seinfeld, God bless!" One question: why pringles?

Another solid episode of TTA as always, although these earlier episodes seem to have slightly sloppier writing than the rest. For example, in previous episodes Demon King and Raccoon both get criticized for their poor typing, but in this episodes Gamecrazed can tell that Rob* is British by his acccent. So does the TOME game support text chat or voice chat? And if it supports both, why would anybody bother with voice chat except for extremely shy people, which Demon King and Raccoon don't seem to be? It manages to be good stuff despite the minor quirks thankfully, and the quirks seem to dissapear as time goes on.

I've started rewatching TTA for the heck of it, and it's interesting to see how it's gradually improved over time as your skills have increased Kirb. There's something I've gotta ask, though (SPOILERS):

Why didn't Flamegirl just log out to escape RavenFreak? If there's no official explanation, tell me if you like mine:

It's meantioned that RavenFreak is a more skilled hacker than Raccoon and BlingBling were. The secret door RavenFreak showed Flamy seems suspicious, and the area RF takes FG to seems awfully sparse graphically. Therefore, RF probably created the door and the hidden area herself, and added an evil little stipulation to force FG to stay logged in; characters that try to log out of RF's hidden area are instead deleted. FG would've thought to herself about how silly this whole kidnapping thing was and tried to log out, only for RF to brag about her clever little hack; then at the end, RF could delete the door connecting the hidden area to the rest of the game, forcing Alpha to tap more deeply into his mysteeeeroius powahs to get the gang back out, making for a couple of interesting scenes to flesh out the episode.

As it is, this is a pretty good episode although the kidnapping feels under-explained and the DBZ conversation feels a bit odd in a flash that supposedly takes place in the year 2020. I look forward to catching up to the post-#47 episodes which I have yet to see.

That was some pretty interesting nonsense. The only improvement I can think of offhand would be to have the Cotton Eye Joe music come back in when he resumes walking, to make the scream-a-thon seem extra silly and pointless. I like how the other guy just stood there wondering what the heck was going on instead of running away in terror.

On the one hand, this is clearly one of the worst things ever, albeit competently made. On the other hand, it was also hilarious in a disturbing way.
